    The Solicitor General's Death a big loss to the Office of Attorney General

    The Office of the Attorney General was shocked by the sudden passing away of the late Frederick John Gilu, Solicitor General who passed on a week ago.

    The late Frederick John Gilu was appointed as Solicitor General in May 2017.

    According to a doctor's report, the late Frederick Gilu was attacked by a heart attack at his home on Saturday afternoon later the doctor declared him dead.

    He was formerly the Director of the Policy Unit at the office of the Attorney General upon recommendation of a judicial panel.

    Vanuatu’s Attorney General, Arnold Kiel Loughman described late Gilu as one of the best constitutional lawyers in the country.

    Attorney General Loughman added that he is one of the few qualified and experienced litigation lawyers whom I rely on his advice at all times.

    He said Frederick Gilu spent well over 20 years serving the government of the Republic of Vanuatu.

    Gilu is responsible for representing the Attorney General in his absence and the position of Solicitor General is one of the highest under the Justice Department.

    Also, Gilu was the Chairman of the Vanuatu Law Reform Commission till the day he passed away.

    The Secretary of the Law Reform Commission, Lawson Jack Samuel said that during late Gilu’s leadership as Chair of the Vanuatu Law Reform Commission, the Commission has progressed tremendously to what it is today.

    Mr. Samuel added that even though he left us, the Secretariat of the VLRC would continue to carry on his dreams and aspirations of VLRC becoming a more vibrant facilitator of law review in Vanuatu.

    His dead body was taken to his home island of Pentecost to be laid to rest.
