    Tanna New Correctional Center

The Tanna New Correctional Center has been officially opened with great confidence and pride.

The grand opening ceremony of the Tanna Island Correctional Centre, worth an impressive 97 million Vatu, was held today at the Isangel Tanna.

The government of Vanuatu has taken full responsibility for financing this project which is the first of many correctional centers to be established across all six provinces.

The brand new correctional center stands as concrete proof of the government's unwavering commitment to ensuring the safety and security of Vanuatu.

This new correctional center is a testament to the government's commitment to keeping Vanuatu safe and secure.

The presence of a government delegation, distinguished by the attendance of the esteemed Justice Minister, John Amos Nalau, lent an air of confidence and authority to the occasion's proceedings.

The esteemed Justice Minister, John Amos Nalau, and the leader of the opposition Ishmael Kalsakau, along with other dignitaries, graced the occasion with their presence, lending an air of confidence and authority to the government and opposition delegation.

They are all well-respected and accomplished in their respective fields, and their presence adds significant value to the delegation.

In his speech, the Honorable Minister for Justice emphasized the importance of having new and standardized correctional facilities that meet the UN Convention on Human Rights.

The government, along with its partners, is committed to building correctional centers of the same design in all six provinces.

This is a crucial step towards ensuring that our justice system is in line with international standards.

He mentioned the Vanuatu-Australia Policing and Justice Program has also been working collaboratively to build police posts in remote parts of the country.

This initiative will make it easier for people to access justice in their communities, regardless of their location.

It is also vital to note that the Port Vila Correctional Low-risk Centre, which is set to be constructed in the second quarter of this year, is a significant milestone.

The two centers in Vila are not up to international human rights standards, and this new facility will help address that issue.

Furthermore, the government has committed to creating a Juvenile law to govern the newly built Juvenile Center in Santo.

This move is crucial in ensuring that Vanuatu provide the best care and support to our young people.

However, the government and its partners need cooperation to realize their plans and bring development to those rural and remote communities.

We are proud to say that the government of Vanuatu is funding the entire project, while the Australian government is providing bedding, cooking utensils, and other items inside the center.

This is a true testament to our commitment to providing the best facilities and care to those in our correctional system.

The Jiangsu International Company based in Papua New Guinea has achieved a significant milestone by delivering the new Correctional Centre to the Department of Correctional Services today 22nd February 2024.

This company won the tender for the project and completed it in just over six months, despite unforeseen circumstances.

The Tafea Provincial Government and its people are a testament to the positive impact these developments can make difference in their lives.
