Celebrating International Women’s Day: Accelerate Action for Gender Equality in Vanuatu's Justice Sector

The Ministry of Justice and Community Services proudly celebrated the International Women’s Day with the theme “Accelerate Action” during a gathering of women from the justice sector. The event highlighted the significance of turning promises into progress at national, regional, and global levels.

Mrs. Rothina Noka, Director of Women's Affairs, addressed the attendees with a powerful message underscoring the day’s theme. “Today’s main theme, 'Action Promises into Progress,' is ringing loud and clear across all platforms,” she noted. Mrs. Noka emphasized the commitment of the Department of Women's Affairs to develop the National Gender Equality Policy and the Provincial Action Plans for provinces.

“We have established Thematic Working Groups at both national and provincial levels to coordinate, monitor, and report on the progress of five strategic areas crucial for gender equality,” Mrs. Noka stated. She expressed gratitude to the New Zealand High Commission and the Australian High Commission for their generous support, which has been instrumental in bringing these plans to fruition.

In her remarks, Mrs. Noka called upon all stakeholders within the justice sector—legislators, lawyers, financial officers, gender equality focal points, planning officers, and NGOs—to continue advocating for change. “Stand up and take courage; do not be afraid to make a difference. We are all agents of change appointed for such a time as this,” she declared./

Emily Fisher, Deputy Australian High Commissioner to Vanuatu, echoed the sentiments of the celebration, emphasizing that this year’s International Women’s Day holds a special significance for the justice sector. “Today is not just about celebrating achievements; it’s also about acknowledging the importance of mental health within the profession,” she said. Fisher commended the justice sector for its efforts to accelerate action for gender equality in Vanuatu and highlighted the outstanding presence of women in leadership roles.

She further reiterated the commitment of the Vanuatu-Australia Partnership to support women and girls within the justice sector. “The new Vanuatu Australia Police and Justice Program (VAPJP) phase 3 will ensure that women have access to leadership pathways, professional development, and a strong support network,” Fisher assured. “Together, we are dedicated to enhancing justice services for women and children at risk of domestic violence, especially in remote areas.”

The celebration culminated in a joyous display of unity and excitement with a Zumba dance session, featuring all women working in the justice sector and their male counterparts. The event underscored the vibrant community of women professionals who are committed to driving change and advancing gender equality in Vanuatu.

As we reflect on the theme “Accelerate Action,” let us all commit to fostering an environment where women can thrive and lead in every sphere of society. Together, we can turn promises into lasting progress.
