The Department of Correctional Services has received over 200 uniforms valued at approximately VT3 million, donated by the People’s Republic of China through its Embassy in Vanuatu.
The uniforms, which will be distributed to correctional officers across the nation, are intended to improve professionalism and discipline within the department.
During the official handover ceremony on Friday, March 21 at Independence Park, Director General of the Ministry of Justice, Arthur Faerua, acknowledged the long-standing diplomatic ties between Vanuatu and China. He noted that the relationship dates back to 1982 when Vanuatu’s first Prime Minister, Father Walter Lini, made his inaugural diplomatic visit to Beijing. Faerua emphasised that the partnership has grown over the years, expanding across various sectors.
Minister of Justice, Youth and Community Services, Job Andy, in his speech, recognised the important role of the Correctional Services Department within Vanuatu’s criminal justice system. “The Correctional Services is the final stage of the justice process where individuals in conflict with the law are managed, rehabilitated, and reintegrated into society. It is equally important within the justice system,” he stated.
He thanked China for its continued support, noting that the donation marks a new chapter in Vanuatu-China cooperation, particularly in the justice sector. “Today’s collaboration marks another milestone in our relationship. It is a prime example of people-to-people diplomacy, reflecting solidarity and strong ties between our nations,” he added.
Addressing correctional officers, the minister emphasised the importance of discipline and professionalism. “The Correctional Services department, like the Vanuatu Police Force, is a disciplined institution. The uniform represents order, professionalism, and public trust in law enforcement. It is my expectation that with today’s donation, uniform discipline will be reinforced to meet professional standards. Officers must wear their uniforms with pride and use them strictly for official duties,” he urged.
The Honorable Minister also acknowledged other development partners, such as Australia and New Zealand, for their continued commitment to Vanuatu Correctional Services over the past years.
Chinese Ambassador to Vanuatu, Li Minggang, reaffirmed China’s commitment to supporting Vanuatu’s development. “China is pleased to donate 222 sets of uniforms, valued at VT3 million, to the Ministry of Justice, Youth and Community Services. These uniforms were specifically manufactured in China following a request from the ministry last year. I hope this donation will enhance the professional image and working conditions of Vanuatu’s correctional officers, enabling them to serve their communities more effectively,” Ambassador Li stated.
He further emphasised the strong diplomatic ties between the two nations. “Vanuatu is a good friend and partner of China in the Pacific,” the Ambassador said.
“Over the past 43 years, our countries have built an enduring friendship, strengthened political trust, and achieved new milestones in cooperation. Last July, former Prime Minister Charlot Salwai met with Chinese President Xi Jinping in Beijing, where both sides agreed to upgrade our relationship to a comprehensive strategic partnership. We are committed to building a China-Vanuatu community with a shared future.”
