Australia and Vanuatu Open Renovated Disability and Child Desk Office in MALAMPA

Lakatoro, MALAMPA Province – A newly renovated Disability and Child Desk Office was officially opened at the MALAMPA Provincial Government Council (MPGC) Headquarters, marking a significant step forward in the delivery of justice and support services to vulnerable groups in the province.

The opening ceremony was officiated by the Australian Deputy High Commissioner to Vanuatu, Emily Fisher, alongside Vanuatu’s Minister of Justice, Youth and Community Services, Job Andy, and senior officials from the Ministry of Justice and Correctional Services.

The refurbishment was carried out by local firm Yomal Construction and funded by the Australian Government through the Vanuatu Skills Partnership (VSP), under the MALAMPA Skills Centre.

Deputy High Commissioner Fisher praised the project as a symbol of the enduring partnership between Australia and Vanuatu and a joint commitment to improving access to essential services, particularly in rural and remote communities.

“This achievement reflects the Vanuatu Government’s efforts to deliver vital justice services and to keep communities safe,” Fisher said. “Australia is proud to have supported this initiative, which will enhance the rights and wellbeing of children and people with disabilities.”

She highlighted the alignment of the project with Vanuatu’s National Sustainable Development Plan — The People’s Plan — and commended the collaboration among all stakeholders, including the Ministry of Justice, provincial authorities, local churches, and community leaders.

The renovation was made possible by an investment of over VT 1 million last October. Fisher also recognized the builders, graduates of the MALAMPA Skills Centre’s construction training programs, who have since formed the Malekula Central North South Construction Company.

“When we invest in local skills, we strengthen our provinces and reduce the need to outsource expertise,” she added.

Minister of Justice, Youth and Community Services, Job Andy welcomed the opening, emphasizing the importance of decentralizing justice services.

“This office brings services closer to our people and represents progress in making justice more accessible, especially for vulnerable groups in remote areas of MALAMPA,” Andy said.

The new facility is expected to serve as a critical point of contact for citizens seeking justice support and protection services in the province.
