Tanna, August 2025 – The 5th National Arts and Culture Festival was officially opened by the Minister of Custom, Arts and Culture, Hon. Job Sam Andy, during a vibrant ceremony in Lenakel, Tanna.
The event brought together nearly 1,000 cultural groups from all six provinces, each showcasing the unique traditions of their home islands.
The opening was attended by the Right Honorable Prime Minister, Jotham Napat, and his full Council of Ministers, who have been on Tanna for two weeks in support of both the 2025 Public Service Day and Vanuatu’s 45th Independence Anniversary.
In his address, Minister Andy thanked the government for its financial support, which made the festival possible. Held every five years, the event reflects the government’s commitment to preserving and promoting Vanuatu’s rich indigenous heritage.
“This is more than a celebration,” Minister Andy said. “It is a platform for cultural preservation, education, and unity especially for our younger generation. It reminds us of who we are, and the values that hold us together.”
The festival also highlights the importance of protecting Vanuatu’s intangible heritage amid rapid modernization. It provides a space for intergenerational learning and cultural resilience.
This year’s festival runs alongside Public Service Day, creating a powerful combination of cultural expression and government outreach.
In addition to traditional performances, several special events are scheduled across Tanna, including:
- Music Festival at the foot of Mt. Yasur, featuring local and regional bands
- Film Festival at Yakel Custom Village, screening locally made cultural films
- Surfing and Horse Racing at Nanunata, combining sport, culture, and nature
- Praise and Worship Gatherings in Naka, North Tanna, led by faith-based communities
Thousands of visitors, performers, and community members are expected to take part in the week-long celebration, marking one of the largest cultural gatherings in Vanuatu’s history.
