Tafea Council of Chiefs Formed to Strengthen Unity and Cultural Leadership

“Historic signing unites traditional leaders of five islands during National Arts & Culture Festival”

The Tafea Council of Chiefs was officially established on Tanna Island during the 5th National Arts & Culture Festival, marking a historic moment for traditional leadership in Vanuatu.

The signing ceremony was witnessed by the Minister of Custom and Culture, Job Andy, President of the Malvatumauri Council of Chiefs, Chief Merhimba Dangdang Paul Ravun, alongside the Secretary General of Tafea Province, Mr. Joe Iautim.

Chairman of the Nikolatan Council of Chiefs, Chief Peter Marcel, explained that only chiefs formally recognized by the Malvatumauri National Council of Chiefs and the paramount chiefs of each islands will automatically become members of the newly formed body.

“This is the first of its kind in Vanuatu, and we hope other provinces will follow the example Chief Marcel said. “It is a milestone that demonstrates the unity and shared vision of our leaders.”

Chief Marcel said the creation of the council comes at a time of great significance, coinciding with the national government’s declaration of Tafea Province as the Nation’s Cultural Hub — a recognition that aligns with the province’s deep-rooted traditions, rich heritage, and leadership in cultural preservation.

The Tafea Council of Chiefs aims to:

    • Strengthen unity among traditional leaders of the five islands
    • Safeguard and promote kastom and cultural heritage
    • Support community development through leadership grounded in integrity and tradition
    • Collaborate with national authorities to represent the province’s interests

The initiative has been widely welcomed by chiefs, communities, and government leaders, who see it as a vital step in reinforcing traditional governance structures alongside modern development.

“When chiefs are united, the people are united. This council will be the voice of Tafea’s kastom and a bridge between the old and the new,” said Chief Marcel.

The establishment of the council is seen as a model for other provinces, reinforcing Vanuatu’s identity as a nation built on strong cultural foundations.
