PM Napat Ignites First Volcano Music Festival in Tanna

“PM Napat declares Tafea Province Vanuatu’s Cultural Hub to preserve heritage and boost tourism.”

Tanna, Tafea Province – Against the dramatic backdrop of the Yasur Volcano, the Right Honourable Jotham Napat, Prime Minister of the Republic of Vanuatu, officially launched the nation’s first-ever Volcano Music Festival on the Siwi Ash Plains, White Sands, Tanna.

The landmark event marks a bold celebration of culture, tradition, and local talent, with the Prime Minister declaring Tanna and the wider Tafea Province as Vanuatu’s official Cultural Hub—following a recent decision by the Council of Ministers. He said this recognition would strengthen the province’s role in preserving heritage while creating new opportunities for tourism and creative industries

Prime Minister Napat stressed that both modern music and traditional singing hold equal importance as cultural expressions, describing music as a “universal language” that connects people across communities and generations. Hosting the festival in the shadow of the world-renowned Yasur Volcano, he noted, was a fitting choice to inspire local pride while drawing the attention of international visitors. The event was strategically timed to coincide with the 5th National Arts & Culture Festival, honouring the enduring contributions of chiefs in cultural preservation.

He also acknowledged the East Tanna and White Sands Area Councils for jointly hosting the festival, recognising the dedication of local communities who raised funds, as well as the support from Members of Parliament representing Tanna Island.

Calling the Volcano Music Festival “more than just music,” Prime Minister Napat described it as a dynamic platform to showcase Vanuatu’s creative talent, boost tourism, and prepare young people for future opportunities in the fast-growing creative sector.

He reaffirmed his commitment as member of parliament that he will work collaboratively with other six MPs of Tanna to sustaining the festival, ensuring it becomes a signature celebration of Tafea Province’s cultural and artistic heritage.
