New Partnership Launches Detainee Clean-Up Initiative in Port Vila

Port Vila, Vanuatu –27-02-2025: In a strong show of unity and shared responsibility, leaders from the Vanuatu Ministry of Justice and Community Services, the Department of Correctional Services, and the Port Vila City Council have officially activated a transformative Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) that places community partnership and second chances at the heart of Port Vila’s clean-up and rehabilitation efforts.

The partnership formalises collaboration to involve detainees in community clean-up initiatives as part of their rehabilitation and reintegration efforts.

Director General Cherol Ala Ianna encouraged all detainees participating in the program to see themselves as “City Ambassadors.” She reminded them that despite being detainees, they still have the ability to make a positive impact in society. She stressed the importance of demonstrating responsibility to the community and serving with dignity, while preparing themselves to return as changed individuals once their time is completed.

This initiative has already commenced on Tanna and will officially begin in Port Vila on Monday.

The Director General expressed sincere appreciation to the Department of Correctional Services and the Port Vila City Council for their commitment in officially rolling out the initiative. The event also included the official launch of tools and equipment that will be used for the clean-up activities.

The Town Clerk of Port Vila City Council, Avio Niki Roberts expressed his strong support for the initiative and welcomed the collaboration. He assured the Director General and the Director of Correctional Services that the Council looks forward to expanding similar initiatives in the future. The Town Clerk further confirmed that additional tools will be provided to support the clean-up program.

Meanwhile, the Director of the Department of Correctional Services, Johnny Marango reminded all detainees to prioritise safety while carrying out their duties, especially when working along main roads. He emphasised that the safety and wellbeing of participants remain paramount throughout the program.

This collaboration reflects a shared commitment to rehabilitation, community partnership, and building a cleaner and stronger Port Vila through collective effort.
