The Department of Correctional Services has, for the first time, established a permanent Parole Board in Tafea Province - marking a major step forward in strengthening the rehabilitation and reintegration of detainees in the communities.

The newly appointed board, comprising two members, underwent induction training earlier this week before formally signing their contracts. In its inaugural sitting, held, the board approved the release of five detainees on parole.

This historic decision represents the first time a Parole Board has convened in the island of Tanna, Tafea Province.

Director of Correctional Services, Johnny Marango, described the development as a milestone for Tafea Province.

“This is a proud moment for Tafea. It is the first parole release on Tanna and reflects what we call unlocking the second prison—offering detainees a second chance. It demonstrates that the system is working, allowing individuals to serve part of their sentence in custody before reintegrating into society with the support of their families,” he said.

Mr Marango added that the parole system plays a crucial role in helping detainees rebuild their lives while maintaining structured oversight.

The five released detainees will remain under supervision and are not yet fully free. They are returning to the community under strict conditions set by the Parole Board, with authorities continuing to monitor, guide, and support them to ensure full compliance with all parole requirements.

The occasion was marked by emotional scenes at the correctional centre, as family members gathered at the gate to welcome their loved ones home with traditional garlands - symbolising forgiveness, acceptance, and a new beginning.
