Luganville, SANMA – 27-04-2026: In a landmark moment for youth empowerment, SANMA’s young leaders have taken a bold step forward - coming together for the first time to ignite a united vision for the future, despite challenges, and laying the foundation for stronger youth leadership, representation, and development across the province.
Despite ongoing challenges related to funding and travel, youth representatives from across SANMA made the journey to Luganville to take part in the historic gathering. The meeting resulted in the election of an interim committee and the development of a three-month action plan to guide immediate priorities.
The newly established committee is chaired by Firmin Tavueline of the Usiroro Matai Rani Area Council in the Big Bay bush. Its formation aligns SANMA with other provinces that have already established similar youth governance structures nationwide.
At present, all Provincial Youth Committee and Area Youth Committee members serve on a voluntary basis without financial remuneration. However, efforts are underway to formally integrate these committees within Area Councils, enabling both government and non-governmental organisations (NGOs) to provide financial support and incentives.
In SANMA, the Department of Youth and Sports has reaffirmed its commitment to strengthening Area Youth Sub-Committees within Area Councils. This initiative is expected to enhance youth governance at the community level and improve coordination among key stakeholders.
Key priorities identified during the meeting include conducting province-wide youth registration, strengthening coordination with youth and sports authorities, and implementing awareness programs to address issues affecting young people. The committee also plans to collect and document data on youth engagement - particularly in business activities to better inform government and partner support initiatives.
Youth leaders highlighted the vital role young people play in the local economy through activities such as agriculture, livestock farming and small businesses, while emphasizing the need for greater recognition and improved access to services.
The SANMA Provincial Youth Council will serve a four-year term, during which members - currently all volunteers will work to advance youth development throughout the province.
The committee expressed its appreciation for the support provided by Youth Officer Johnny Avock, Area Administrator Paul Jamaran, and the Ministry of Youth, Justice and Community Services in making the meeting possible.
