Port Vila, 25 June 2026: The national consultation on Vanuatu's proposed Disability Bill has officially commenced in TAFEA Province, marking an important step towards strengthening the rights, protection, inclusion and participation of persons with disabilities across the country.

The consultation team is currently in Tanna Island engaging with persons with disabilities, caregivers, chiefs, community leaders, government representatives, civil society organizations, faith-based groups and other stakeholders to gather views and recommendations on the proposed legislation.

The nationwide consultation follows the official launch of the consultation process by the Minister of Youth, Justice and Community Services, Hon. Job Sam Andy, on Liro, Paama Island earlier this month.

Minister Andy said the proposed Disability Bill is an important initiative that reflects the Government's commitment to ensuring that persons with disabilities are fully included in national development and decision-making processes.

"The proposed Disability Bill represents an important step towards creating a more inclusive society where every citizen, regardless of ability, can participate fully and equally in community life," Minister Andy said.

Speaking during the consultation, Acting Disability Desk Coordinator, Mr. Vjay Vijinaia Lele, highlighted that the consultations are designed to ensure that the voices of persons with disabilities are at the centre of the law-making process.

"We want the proposed Disability Bill to reflect the realities faced by persons with disabilities throughout Vanuatu and to promote accessibility, equality, inclusion and respect for the rights of all people," Mr. Lele said.

Mr. Lele further explained that "Our goal is to complete the nationwide consultations, carefully consider the feedback received, and finalize the proposed Disability Bill for submission to the Council of Ministers and Parliament as soon as possible.”

The Ministry of Youth, Justice and Community Services (MYJCS) also acknowledges the valuable support of the Pacific Community (SPC), which is fully funding the Disability Bill consultation program in TAFEA Province.

The Ministry of Youth, Justice and Community Services encourages all stakeholders to actively participate in the consultations and contribute to shaping legislation that will impact and improve the lives of persons with disabilities for generations to come.
