The introduction of a new land law called the Customary Land Management Act No. 33 of 2013 repealed and replaced the CLT Act No.7 of 2001. The Customary Land Management Office was established in December 2013, following legislative changes to the Customary Lands Tribunal Act 7 2001.

The functions of the Office include
• Facilitation of resolution of land disputes
• Raising awareness of importance of land and the role of the lands tribunal
• Assistance and Support in strengthening the custom governance system
